The Art of Growing and Showing Asparagus.

Asparagus Growing.

Native of Poland and South Russia. This perennial plant improves with age and cultivation.

Requires deep well drained soil, well rotted organic vegetable compost is very beneficial. This very hardy plant can be found growing wild on sand banks by the sea. It is useful to bear this fact in mind in selecting land for its cultivation.

Above all things Asparagus plants need well-drained land. Deep sandy loam lying on gravel, or some other porous foundation, suits it best. Those possessing such land would do well to make a speciality of Asparagus, especially if the land is near the sea, as seaweed is an excellent manure for it.

But even if the land that you garden on is the cold clayey soil, which of all soils the Asparagus dislikes the most, even this soil can be made to yield a good large crop every season. It will take a little more effort but once the foundation is there a good crop can be had for at least 20 years.
To make clay soil suitable for Asparagus Roots the site should be dug to a depth of 2 feet, in the bottom of the trench should be placed broken rubble or better still crushed building clinker or thomolite blocks. The trench should have a slight fall from one end to the other, so to take away excessive water.

The top-soil that has been removed from the trench should have large amounts of gravel incorporated into it, it is also a good idea to add equal amounts of well Rotted Organic Garden Vegetable Compost into the mix. How to make Garden vegetable Compost can be found at:-

Now backfill the trench with the mixed growing medium of gravel, compost and top-soil. The trench should be treaded down firmly. The most convenient width of the bed is 5 feet. This will hold three rows of Asparagus Plants, the outer rows being each 15 inches from the side. There should be a path or alley 18 inches wide on each side of the bed.

A well made Asparagus Bed will last a lifetime, so that a little extra initial expense and effort must be considered. All preparation of the Asparagus Bed should be done in the winter.
In warmer countries the end of March is the best time to plant the Asparagus Plants, in the colder Northern districts early April. In making ready for planting 4 strong wooden stakes are inserted at each corner of the bed, thus defining it. The surface soil is forked over, and made level.
